One of the absolute best perks of living in Sioux Falls is our incredible park system. Whether you are living in a cozy apartment near downtown or a spacious rental home in the suburbs, you are never more than a few minutes away from a green space. At Luke Properties, we love helping our residents settle into the community, and there is no better way to feel at home than exploring the natural beauty of the Big Sioux River Valley.

From the iconic roar of the falls to the quiet, wooded paths of our southern parks, Sioux Falls offers over 80 parks and a world-class trail system. Here is our guide to the best outdoor spots near your Luke Properties rental.

The Crown Jewel: Falls Park

You can’t talk about Sioux Falls without starting at the namesake. Located just north of downtown, Falls Park covers 123 acres. It’s the perfect spot for a weekend morning stroll or an evening date. If you’re renting near the city center, this is likely your "backyard."

Don’t miss the five-story observation tower at the Visitor Center for a panoramic view of the skyline. In the winter, the park transforms into a Winter Wonderland with thousands of lights, making it a year-round destination for our residents.

The Big Sioux River Trail

For those who love to stay active, the Big Sioux River Greenway Traverse is a true local treasure. This paved trail system forms a nearly 30-mile loop around the entire city.

What’s great about this trail is its accessibility. No matter where your Luke Properties rental is located, you can usually jump on the trail at a nearby entry point. It connects many of the city's major parks, including Spencer, Tomar, and Legacy Park. It is perfect for cycling, long-distance running, or a leisurely walk with the dog. Note for our pet-owning tenants: please remember to keep your furry friends on a leash and bring a bag to keep our trails clean!

Family Fun at Terrace Park

If you are looking for a park with a bit of everything, Terrace Park near the Covell Lake area is a neighborhood favorite. It’s home to the Shoto-gan Japanese Gardens, which offer a peaceful retreat for reflection or reading a book. During the summer, the Terrace Park family aquatic center is the place to be to beat the South Dakota heat. The historic stone terraces and the views over the lake make it one of the most picturesque spots in the city.

Finding Nature at Sertoma Park & Outdoor Campus

Located in the southwestern part of the city, Sertoma Park is a hub of activity. It’s famous for its massive playground (often called the "blue park" by locals) and its proximity to The Outdoor Campus.

If you want to learn more about South Dakota’s wildlife and environment, The Outdoor Campus offers free classes on everything from fishing to cross-country skiing. It’s a fantastic resource for families renting in the southwest region of Sioux Falls who want to dive deeper into outdoor hobbies.

Hidden Gems: McKennan and Tuthill Parks

McKennan Park is the city’s oldest park and sits in a beautiful historic district. In the summer, the sunken gardens are in full bloom, and the free outdoor theater performances are a must-see.

Further south, Tuthill Park offers some of the best elevation changes in the city. If you’re looking for a bit of a workout or a great place for disc golf, Tuthill is your spot. In the winter, it boasts one of the best sledding hills in the region!

Tips for Enjoying Our Parks

To make the most of your time outdoors, keep these simple tips in mind:

  • Check the Map: The City of Sioux Falls offers a digital trail map that shows construction updates and closures.
  • Stay Hydrated: South Dakota summers can be surprisingly humid and hot. Most major parks have water fountains, but it’s always smart to carry your own.
  • Safety First: If you’re out on the trails at dusk, wear reflective gear. Our trails are well-traveled, but safety is always a priority.

Final Thoughts

Living in a Luke Properties rental means you’re connected to more than just a house; you’re connected to a vibrant, active community. We encourage all our tenants to get out and explore the parks that make Sioux Falls such a beautiful place to live.

If you’re looking for a new place to call home that is close to one of these amazing parks, check out our current listings or give us a call. We’d love to help you find the perfect spot near your favorite trail!
